Steps to winterize your jet ski

1. Drain the water from your jet ski right after it has been used for its final ride of the season. This is easily accomplished when the jet ski is on the trailer on the loading dock and the jet ski is out of the water and the trailer is tilted so the stern is lower than the bow (be careful and take your time). Run the engine a few times (3X is fine) for no more than 30 seconds each time. Tilt the handle-back and-forth while the jet ski is running to drain the water from the engine.

2. Use mild soap and water to scrub the exterior of the jet ski. Wash away all algae, water stains and grime from the sides, seat and back. Make sure there is no water left in the hull of the jet ski when cleaning.

3. Use a mild wax on the exterior to give it an added protective coat and shine. It might be a good idea to use a light coat of multi-purpose lube to coat any metal surfaces such as latches and hooks.

4. Top of the fuel tank before storing your jet ski for the winter. Add the appropriate amount of gas stabilizer according to the directions on the bottle to keep your gas for the next season. Using stabilizer prevents the gas from getting gummy, which can eventually clog the carburetors. Run the engine in 30-second intervals several times (3X is fine) to work the gas stabilizer through the fuel system and it will drain any excess water out of the engine as well.

4. Remove the air filter to allow easy access to the carburetor throat. Spray fogging oil in the carburetors and spark plug cylinders. Spray the fogging oil while the engine is idling. Continue spraying until the engine stalls and replace the air filter.

5. Remove the spark plugs. Make sure the wires are grounded first. Spray fogging oil into each spark plug hole. Put a rag over each hole and push the start button to disperse the oil. The engine will not start because there aren't spark plugs in place. Replace the plugs and clean up any excess oil.

6. Remove the battery (Check your battery and battery chargers for specific safety instructions), negative connection first, followed by the positive connection. Store the battery in a warm, clean area. Place the battery on a rubber mat for storage. Attach the battery to a trickle charger and remember to check the battery water level every month throughout the storage period.

7. Because your craft will have a full tank of gas, remember to be cautious about the location where it will rest during the off season. Put your trailer in a level position in the place where you intend to store the jet ski. The best way to prevent flat or corrupted trailer tires over the off season is to take the tires off, store them indoors and use concrete blocks or a jack to hold the trailer in position.

If you choose to leave the tires on, cover them with tarps or durable plastic bags. If the ground is gravel or dirt, it is recommended that you place boards under the tires to prevent tire rotting. Once the trailer is in place, unlatch the seat of the jet ski to allow air to circulate through your PWC and prevent any moisture from being trapped inside the craft.

8. Place steel wool or a rag taunt inside the exhaust port to prevent any small animals or bugs from nesting in the craft.

9. Finally, place your cover over your jet ski to keep it clean and protected while it's being stored.
